A bird heard calling and glimpsed along the Waterfall Trail, Kamarora, was thought to be this species. The size appeared right.

TURNICIDAE

Quite a few sightings en route to and in Tangkoko NP and around rice fields and swampland in the Toraut area.

*Barred Rail Gallirallus torquatus

A few sightings in the Kosinggolon area; a maximum of four seen in flooded fields near Tadoi village en route to Toraut

*Isabelline Bushhen Amaurornis isabellinus
Heard calling in many localities, including Tangkoko. Kamarora and Toraut area. Birds seen briefly by some at Kamarora and Toraut area, usually in flight along Rdsides. We were starting to worry that we would not get a decent view of this species when one gave itself up and walked into full view along a busy Rdside south of Manado City.

Moderately common in swampland around Tambun, Toraut and Kosinggolan, and Bogani Nani Wartabone NP.

Not overly common, a few in the Tangkoko and Toraut areas and at Kamarora; also on Mantehagi Island, Manado Bay

*Brown Cuckoo-dove Macropygia amboinensis
Moderately common in low to mid elevation forest in all three national parks visited. Greatest numbers (c10) were in mid elevation forest near Tongoa, Lore Lindu NP

*Sulawesi Black Pigeon Turacoena manadensis
Some nice views in the scope of this rather scarce endemic. Around six birds seen in total. About three in Tangkoko, about two at Tambun, Bogani Nani Wartabone NP; and one along the Matayangan Rd (Bogani Nani Wartabone NP). A bird of the lower to mid elevation, often in secondary growth.

*Emerald Dove Chalcophaps indica
Mainly seen in the Tangkoko area either en route to or in the park, where it occurs alongside Stephan's Dove. More often in secondary growth than Stephan's.

*Stephan's Dove Chalcophaps stephani
Just a few seen in Tangkoko and in Bogani Nani Wartabone NP, best views along the coast trail in Tangkoko NP

*Pink-necked Green Pigeon Treron vernans

Common in lower to mid elevation forest, usually around clearings and edges. Greatest numbers (c10) in a fruiting tree Tongoa Rd, Kamarora.

*White-bellied Imperial Pigeon Ducula forsteni
A mighty bird with a big voice - surely the most handsome of the imperial pigeons. Moderately common in lower to mid elevation forest in all three national parks visited. Best numbers (c10) in the Dong Dongi area, Lore Lindu NP.

*Grey-headed Imperial Pigeon Ducula radiata
Not so common, quite a difficult bird, just a few birds in lower to mid elevation forests in each of the three national parks visited, some nice looks in the scope. Oddly, others for example, (Luijendijk 1997) have recorded this species in high numbers in Lore Lindu NP

*Green Imperial Pigeon Ducula aenea
Fairly common in lower to mid elevation forest in all three national parks. Highest numbers along the coast trail in Tangkoko NP and Tambun, Bogani Nani Wartabone NP, with dozens of birds seen at both localities.

*Sombre Pigeon Cryptophaps poecilorrhoa
Three separate but unsatisfactory views of what must have been this species around Lake Tambing and along the Anaso Rd

PITTACIDAE

*Black Lory Chalcopsitta atra
What a surprise! A pair seen very well on Mantehagi Island, Manado Bay. The birds were, assumedly, escapees although the Headman did not know of anyone who had kept the birds on the island, nor had he ever seen the species previously. They appeared to be of the race atra which occurs naturally on the western part of the Vogelkop, West Papua and on the nearby islands of Batanta and Salawati. The habitat would appear to suit them very well as the species occur in clearings, scattered trees and coconut palms (Forshaw & Cooper 1973). Most of Mantehagi appears to be covered in coconut palms with scattered trees and patches of re-growth. Although their natural occurrence is not a huge distance away, the species is not known to occur in the Moluccas which is much closer.
